The Scheib family lived in Nuremberg
from 1954-58. Opa was a civil engineer who was in charge of building
bridges and maintaining the Autobahn around Nuremberg.
Nuremberg is famous for its Christkindl
Market, a wonderful celebration during the Advent
season which takes place four weeks prior to Christmas. It is
a period of reflection and anticipation (especially for children).
German families decorate an Advent wreath with four candles and on
each Advent Sunday we light another candle and sing Christmas carols.
When all four candles are lit, Christmas is around the corner.
Children in Germany also have an Advent Calendar. Every day in December
they are allowed to open another window and take the piece of chocolate
which is hidden behind the door. When I was in first grade, the teacher
allowed a student whose behavior was exemplary open the window on
the Advent calendar. What a nice way to encourage good behavior.
